Hello.
I know many of you have messaged me about career changing and while I haven’t spoken about my personal journey (yet), I wanted to give you some suggestions in hopes that one of these fulfilling paths might spark some curiosity and potentially unlock passions and desires you didn’t know were there. At the end, I’m sharing some advice, thoughts, insights on how to approach this new endeavor.
Remember the Richard Scarry books? (If not, please go unlock and heal your inner child by reading one asap) These books were one of my favorites when I was little girls. They often listed out different jobs and professions, and they were always talking about traditions and the changing of the seasons which we love. Anyways, these books are a good reference. And honestly, you never know what might spark your interest. A wise person once told me that your passion and purpose are found in the things you loved most as a child.
Here are some examples of potential career options:
Healthcare Professional (e.g., Nurse, Doctor, Physical Therapist): Providing care and improving patient health.
Lawyer: making a meaningful impact on society by advocating for justice and influencing public policy. Additionally, the legal field provides intellectual stimulation and continuous learning, ensuring a dynamic and engaging work environment.
Therapist/Mental Health Counselor: Helping individuals manage and overcome mental health issues.
Social Worker: Assisting people in coping with challenges in their daily lives.
Teacher/Educator: Inspiring and educating the next generation.
Nonprofit Manager: Leading organizations that make a positive impact on communities.
Environmental Scientist: Working to protect and preserve the environment.
Occupational Therapist: Helping people regain independence in their daily activities.
Research Scientist: Conducting research to advance knowledge and improve lives.
Craving something stable and in demand? Some of these are repeats from above, but these are specifically “recession proof” careers to consider. Some of these are repeats of the above. Here are some more suggestions:
Registered Nurse (RN): Providing essential healthcare services and support to patients.
Lawyer: making a meaningful impact on society by advocating for justice and influencing public policy. Additionally, the legal field provides intellectual stimulation and continuous learning, ensuring a dynamic and engaging work environment.
Software Developer: Creating innovative software solutions that improve lives and businesses.
Physical Therapist: Helping patients recover and regain mobility after injuries or surgeries.
Data Scientist: Analyzing data to drive decisions and innovations across various industries.
Mental Health Counselor: Supporting individuals in managing and overcoming mental health challenges.
Occupational Therapist: Assisting people in developing, recovering, and improving skills needed for daily living.
Medical and Health Services Manager: Overseeing healthcare facilities and ensuring they run efficiently.
Speech-Language Pathologist: Helping individuals with communication and swallowing disorders.
Environmental Engineer: Developing solutions to environmental problems and promoting sustainability.
Primary Care Physician: Providing comprehensive healthcare and preventive services to patients.
If you’ve noticed, many of these require schooling (some much more than others), and while I understand that it is a priviledge to have the opportunity to go to university, if you’re given the chance, I will always advocate/ support/ root for taking on an educational endeavor. Why? Because education is powerful, especially as a woman, and I would argue it’s the biggest most valuable gift you can give yourself. No one can ever take that away from you.
If you’re also considering a career change, I’m going to give you my thoughts, advice, and support:
Navigating a career change is daunting, but if you approach it with open mindedness, you can successfully transition to a new field and find fulfillment in your professional and personal life. The first step is self-assessment. Take the time to reflect on your skills, interests, and values. Identify what you enjoy about your current job and what you find dissatisfying. Consider taking career assessments or working with a career coach to gain insights into careers that align with your strengths and passions. This introspective phase is crucial as it will help you make informed decisions about your next steps.
Once you have a clear idea of the direction you want to pursue, the next step is to research and prepare. Learn as much as you can about the new field, including the required qualifications, industry trends, and key players. Networking is invaluable during this phase. Reach out to professionals in the field through LinkedIn, industry events, or informational interviews to gain firsthand insights and advice. Additionally, consider further education or certification if your desired career path requires it. Online courses, workshops, and part-time study options can provide the flexibility to upskill while still working in your current job.
As you prepare for the transition, update your resume and LinkedIn profile to reflect your new career goals. Highlight transferable skills and relevant experiences that can bridge the gap between your current and desired roles. Tailor your cover letters to showcase your passion for the new field and how your background uniquely positions you for success. Lastly, be patient and persistent. Career changes can take time, and you may face setbacks along the way. Stay focused on your long-term goals, remain adaptable, and keep building your network. With determination and a strategic approach, you can navigate a career change and move toward a more fulfilling professional journey.
