hello.
i have a lot of good recommendations that i’m dying to share with you. this past week i found myself riddled with anxiety, so i took a much needed break from studying and work stuff to immerse myself in literature, films, new tv shows, and writing to you of course. so hello again <3
today’s weekly report will be filled with comforting recommendations and things i’ve found myself enjoying during times i need to decompress. i hope you enjoy.
weekly report:
reading:
-intermezzo by sally rooney: the chokehold this book has on me. i was generously gifted this arc over the summer, and while i devoured it then, i found myself wanting to revisit it during autumn. find my review here. chess, love, sex, angst, despair, philosophy, need i say more?
-rebecca by daphne du maurier: follows a young, unnamed protagonist who marries the wealthy widower maxim de winter, only to find herself living in the shadow of his first wife, rebecca. the haunting atmosphere of manderley, along with the enigmatic presence of rebecca, creates a gripping tale of jealousy, identity, and the complexities of love.
-piranesi by susanna clark: the protagonist lives in a mysterious, labyrinthine house filled with tidal chambers and statues, documenting his surroundings in meticulous detail. as he explores this enchanting world, he uncovers secrets about his reality and the enigmatic other, leading to a profound exploration of isolation, knowledge, and the nature of existence. this book is so good.
-when we cease to understand the world by benjamin labatut: a blend of fiction and philosophy, delving into the lives of scientists whose discoveries changed the course of history. through interconnected stories, labatut explores the moral implications and existential dilemmas that arise from breakthroughs in science, particularly in relation to chaos theory and the atomic bomb.
eating:
-salted maple butter latte: a concoction of nespresso or instant coffee and trader joe’s maple butter. find the recipe all over tiktok (or here so you don’t have to search for it)
-cinnamon rolls: i normally wait until christmas to make homemade cinnamon rolls but i needed a baking project to occupy my mind and i was craving these so badly. this is the recipe i use.
-warm apple cinnamon oatmeal with a splash of cream: i love oatmeal so much. to me there is nothing more comforting or embracing than a warm cup of oatmeal in the morning.
-freshly baked french bread with salted butter: if i’m in a sweet mood, i’ll add blueberry jam. for savory, i’ll add cornichons. most times, i’ll just eat it plain.
-sliced envy apples with artisana almond butter and honey: a favorite childhood snack i carried with me into adulthood.
-mashed potatoes with roasted chicken (or tofu): autumnal, comforting, nourishing.
-soup. soup. soup: soup in bread bowls. homemade soup. soup from a can. chili. chicken noodle. tomato. lentil. i love all soups.
-olive and cream cheese sandwiches: (thanks s&p lunch for introducing this combo to me)
-graham crackers with applesauce and milk: don’t attack me… but soggy graham crackers in a cup with milk and a spoonful of applesauce- it’s like preschool. it takes me back to a time when we could take midday naps in class, have holiday parties with sweet treats, share snacks with our neighbor, have story time… sigh.
playing:
-intermezzo audiobook: so, if you’ve ever watched or read normal people (go watch this show! that’s your homework)… and you crushed on connell, you will devour this audiobook. i’m picky about listening to books. the narrator needs to match the vibe and i crave a soothing voice. this. does. not. disappoint.
-love next door: this is one of my favorite feel-good k dramas of all time. if you loved true beauty k drama and if you enjoyed my year of rest and relaxation by ottessa moshfegh.
-harry potter audiobooks: goes without saying that this is the ultimate comforting autumnal thing to play in the background for autumnal vibes.
obsessing:
-burts bees chai tea lip balm: a sweet treat to apply mid-day.
-ghosty waffle maker: to bring happiness to weekend breakfasts.
-the best hand cream to ever exist: winter is coming. save your hands.
-cloudy mornings, long study dates at the library, cinnamon raisin bread with butter for a snack, fall candles, burgundy nails, gourmand fragrances.
recommending:
-apple juice glasses: i recently bought these after eyeing them for several months. they’re perfect for drinking orange juice out of in the morning or to fill with your dinner drink of choice. they also have little red bow glasses that i’ll get closer to the christmas season. and omgomgomg look at the penguin, snowman, and christmas tree glasses! ah, i can’t wait <3
-hatch alarm clock: i’m raving about this to you again because this (like my beloved candle warmer) truly changed the game for me. if you struggling with waking anxiety, this little tech treat will wake you up gently. it’s customizable so you can choose what sounds to fall asleep to and wake up to. truly, a gem on my nightstand.
treating:
-hobonichi journals: i’ve failed miserably at keeping my resolution to journal more frequently this year. but… as a hobonichi planner enthusiast, i recently discovered how people use the hobonichi weeks notebook as a journal and i’m obsessed. i ordered one with the cover so i can decorate it with stickers and make it cute. i also got this yumi kitagishi pencil board with the matching washi tape. the journal is small so you don’t feel overwhelmed or pressured to fill up the whole page with words. i love watch videos of how other girls decorated and scrapbooked inside their journals. i’ll share mine soon.
-niconeco haul: speaking of journaling and scrapbooking, i decided to order some supplies from my favorite stationery store to fill my journal up with things that spark joy. there are way too many cute things on here to attach links to everything i got, but once it arrives, i’ll share it with you. this collection and this one are some of my favorites. i love their candles. this is a great sticker collection. oh, this one, too. and if you’re looking for a new autumn hobby, i recommend this watercolor palette with this book.
okay, that’s all for today.
if you’re not ready to become a paid subscriber and you have the capacity to leave a tip, that would be so appreciated.Â
i love you.
bye.
I wish I could allow myself to enjoy all the delicious foods you've listed. I am also so curious to know what you are studying in school!
Yes to Autumn Oatmeal!! I made a similar recipe to this one (https://www.ugnebakes.com/plum-and-apple-creamy-porridge/) this weekend and will be making again. So cozy!
