Hello.

I’m trying something a new today.

I’m thinking that once a week, I’m going to write a little essay on a topic that is top of mind before sharing daily news with you. I have a lot of thoughts and opinions and I’m curious to know if you feel the same way about specific subjects. So I’m experimenting. Tell me your thoughts.

Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about the shift I’ve seen in the media from the 2023 girlhood, bows, and nostalgia core trends to this year’s womanhood, femme fatale, and the mob wife aesthetic taking over the internet.

So I’m going to share my thoughts on why 2024 will be the year of the woman…

Throughout 2023, we witnessed an unmistakable shift towards embracing the exuberance, curiosity, and unabashed joy of girlhood. Social media platforms dominated by our generation were flooded with content that celebrated youthful spontaneity, creativity, and individuality. The bow trend, for example, with its playful and delicate aesthetic, beautifully encapsulates the essence of girlhood, symbolizing innocence and youthful charm in fashion. This trend, through its whimsical and gentle appeal, offers a nostalgic nod to the simplicity and joy of early years, resonating deeply with the timeless spirit of girlhood.

But as the calendar turns to 2024, we find ourselves at the precipice of a new era—one where girlhood gracefully transitions into womanhood. It's a societal transition where women embrace the wisdom and experiences that come with age, all while retaining the essence of our youthful spirit. This shift is not a rejection of girlhood but an evolution, a natural progression towards deeper self-discovery.

For example, the rise of the "mob wife" aesthetic displays a sartorial and cultural movement drawing inspiration from the iconic and powerful imagery of women in classic mob and crime films. Characterized by a bold fusion of luxury, strength, and a touch of vintage glamour, this aesthetic is more than just a fashion statement; it's a celebration of empowered womanhood. Women across social media platforms are embracing this style, not only in their wardrobes but also in their attitudes, embodying confidence, assertiveness, and an unapologetic embrace of femininity. Many women are drawing inspiration from iconic mob wives in film including Karen Hill, portrayed by Lorraine Bracco in "Goodfellas," a character known for her tenacity and involvement in her husband's criminal world. Another notable figure is Carmela Soprano, played by Edie Falco in the television series "The Sopranos," embodying the complexity and moral struggles of a woman deeply entwined in a mafia family. These characters have left lasting impressions due to their strength, depth, and multifaceted portrayals of women in the mob lifestyle.

This new aesthetic highlights a growing desire among many women to be seen as equals in all aspects of life, from the boardroom to social settings. The aesthetic isn't just about fashion; it's a reflection of a mindset that values self-empowerment, sophistication, and the freedom to define one's own identity. In this way, the move from girlhood to womanhood isn't just a trend, but rather, a statement about the evolving perception of women in today's world.

In 2024, we'll continue to celebrate the boundless creativity and energy of girlhood, but we'll do so with a newfound appreciation for the strength and resilience that comes with womanhood- a delicate equilibrium between the spirited girl within and the confident woman we are becoming. It's a journey marked by self-assurance, empathy, and an unyielding commitment to authenticity.

Anna Wintour Kept Her Sunglasses On The Entire Time She Was Telling Pitchfork Staffers They Were Getting Laid Off

Speaking of empowered women, the choice by Anna Wintour to wear sunglasses during a meeting to announce layoffs at Pitchfork served as a symbol of emotional detachment and authority, reinforcing her enigmatic public persona. This act also juxtaposes the cold, business-oriented nature of corporate decisions with the personal, human impact they have, creating a stark and memorable image in the narrative of the company's restructuring.

Do better.
