nyc christmas market adventure, being a girl is so much fun, resurgence of meat, and more news
Hello. I’m sharing another small snippet of my day and then we’ll get into some news.
Lately in NYC
-After my dermatology appointment, I went to Bryant Park to visit the Christmas Market. I bought an apple cider donut and it was perfect. They had these fuzzy alpacas and I really wanted to get one of those, but I didn’t.Â
-I visited one of my favorite bookstores, Three Lives & Company. (But I left empty handed. Sad.)
-I was craving coffee so I went to Bar Pisellino and got an americano and my favorite snack, polenta almond cake. And olives.
-There are a lot of Christmasy things I want to do around the city, but it’s so busy and crowded so I think I’ll wait until after Christmas to do them- like visiting Rockefeller, ice skating, etc. Even the Christmas market was packed, but I really wanted a donut.Â
-At night I went on a walk to the market because I needed a lint roller since my scarf shed white fluffies all over my black coat, but sadly they didn’t have one.Â
Are you ready for Christmas? I’m trying to get into the spirit, but alas…
Okay, ready for some news? Bows and girlhood are all the rage, and I’m here for it. I hope it never goes away. I love being a girl.
-Why Girlhood Was Suddenly Back In Style
The article from Highsnobiety explores the recent resurgence of girlhood as a cultural trend, emphasizing its nostalgic and feminist underpinnings. It links the phenomena to powerful female figures and cultural moments, suggesting a collective yearning among women for a time of innocence and exuberance that's often lost in adulthood. Meanwhile, it contrasts this with the male experience, where nostalgia takes different forms, hinting at broader societal expectations and narratives about gender roles.
2023's cultural fascination with "girl" as a concept marks a curious intersection of nostalgia and performance, where grown women enthusiastically embrace youthful femininity amidst a backdrop of shifting feminist ideologies and societal weariness. As the line between girlhood and womanhood blurs in fashion, media, and personal identity, this trend offers both an escape from and a reflection on the complexities of contemporary adult womanhood.
-Bow-nanza! How Bows Became This Year’s Biggest Holiday Decor Trend
In 2023, the bow became more than an accessory—it transformed into a cultural symbol, encapsulating a blend of nostalgia, modern femininity, and a whimsical escape from reality. As the coquette aesthetic swept through every corner of decor and fashion, the simple bow tied together a complex narrative of gender, status, and a yearning for a touch of handmade, personal charm in an increasingly digital and machine-driven world. Whether adorning trees or hair, bows represented a playful, yet pervasive, embrace of a gentler, more decorative aspect of self-expression.
The narrative of Jessica Moss and Kevin Hardesty highlights the complexities and evolving perceptions of age-gap relationships. Their journey, beginning when Moss was a 19-year-old intern and Hardesty a 37-year-old executive, reflects societal discomfort and scrutiny surrounding significant age differences in romantic partnerships. Despite initial hesitations and a break during which Moss married and divorced, their reunion and eventual marriage challenge the stereotypical views of age-gap dynamics. As they navigate public perception and their personal experiences, Moss and Hardesty's story adds to the broader conversation about love, age, and the societal norms that define acceptable relationships.
-Return-to-Office Mandates Are a Disaster for Working Mothers
The article discusses the surprising rebound of women's workforce participation post-pandemic. Initially, there was a concern about a "she-cession" due to women leaving the workforce at alarming rates. However, the trend reversed, with women's participation reaching record levels. This rebound is attributed to the increase in remote and hybrid jobs, which provided flexibility, especially for mothers with young children. The article also touches on the potential negative impact of return-to-office mandates on this progress and emphasizes the importance of remote work in maintaining women's participation in the workforce.
-The Myth Of The Unemployed College Grad
The article challenges the notion that a college degree has lost its value, arguing against media narratives suggesting an economic downturn for recent graduates. It emphasizes that despite current challenges, the long-term benefits of a college education, such as higher earning potential and career stability, remain significant. The piece critiques specific media stories for presenting a distorted view and underscores the enduring advantage of a college degree in the job market.Â
-How Underwear As Outerwear Took Over This Winter’s Catwalk
A discussion about the recent fashion trend of wearing underwear as outerwear. Celebrities like Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Dua Lipa have embraced this style, showcasing pants over tights or as central elements of their outfits. Designers like Miu Miu, Loewe, and Stella McCartney featured similar styles in their collections. This trend, while unique, is not new, echoing past fashion statements. It's seen as a playful, freeing expression, breaking traditional fashion norms.
-To Gen Z, Food Is The New Luxury. What Does That Mean For Fashion?
The article explores how Gen Z is redefining luxury through their fascination with premium food items, like Erewhon smoothies and Joe & the Juice sandwiches, shared on social media. This shift has influenced fashion brands to align with food trends. Delli, a marketplace for artisan foods, exemplifies this trend, offering exclusive, small-batch products. Fashion and beauty brands are collaborating with food companies to capitalize on the cultural appeal of luxury foods, integrating these elements in their campaigns and events.Â
-All Of My Friends Are Eating Meat Again
A cultural shift among a group of friends from staunch vegetarianism and veganism back to consuming meat. It delves into the personal stories and societal influences behind this change, highlighting a mix of apathy, disillusionment, and a desire for indulgence as driving factors, ultimately portraying a nuanced perspective on the evolving attitudes towards dietary choices and environmental consciousness.
