hello.
i’m expanding on a well-loved note i wrote last week hoping that you will pick a few of these to enjoy a more wholesome weekend.
things you can do this weekend instead of being on your phone:
-make blueberry pancakes: eat breakfast in bed with coffee and a magazine or book (print magazines are in fact, elite)
-light the good candles: lately, i’ve been loving this candle (splurge), and this candle (deal)
-make a list of things you want to learn more about: a new language, a skill, a subject, etc. you can listen to podcasts that help teach you languages or go to an art class and do something crafty with your hands. if you live in nyc, i highly recommend happy medium.
-eat cinnamon raisin toast with salted butter
-write a hand written letter to a friend or family member: have you ever had a pen pal? can we bring this back?
-go to an antique store and explore: i hope you live in a city with antique stores near by. you don’t have to buy anything, but it’s fun to explore solo or with a friend.
-visit the library: do you have a library card? if not, i now speak directly to you when i say please please support your local libraries.
-watch a film in the afternoon: i recommend the phantom thread (2017) to feel something and matilda (1996) for comfort. (would also like to note that the phantom thread soundtrack makes me ridiculously emotional).
-take a walk outdoors: touch grass, have a picnic, hopefully it’s not sweltering. if it is, do an indoor activity like the museum. regardless of how cliche this sounds, i must admit that i could quite literally spend the entire day at the met or the new york public library. i’m often reminded how grateful and lucky i am to live in a city with places that make me feel whole and alive.
-eat a big bowl of cherries: bite half and use the other half to stain your lips and cheeks <3
-make a list of all the things you’re excited to do in autumn: an autumn bucket list, halloween costume ideas, recipes you want to make, films you want to watch, books you want to read, etc
-read books: this is a given, right? tell me what you’re reading. pick a few books to have on rotation to fit different moods. if i’m feeling anxious, the last thing i want to read is something heavy or philosophical. i usually have a comfort book, something analytical/ philosophical, and a classic.
-spend time in the kitchen, make a home cooked meal, meal prep snacks and treats, use recipes from old cookbooks: this is a productive hands on activity and cure for anxiety. make an old family recipe or something that brings you comfort.
-play chess: or… the new york times games (i know this involves the phone, but it’s okay)
-go to the farmers market: 100000% the best thing you can do on a weekend during any season. summer stone fruits. please take full advantage of the bounty of delicious fruits and vegetables that bless the farmers market this time of year.
-listen to classical music or jazz or make a new playlist
-get ice cream from the ice cream truck
-listen to ella fitzgerald and billie holiday
-get a disposable film camera and take photos
okay, that’s all for today. the back to school letter will be going out in exactly one week so stay tuned for that.
if you’re not ready to become a paid subscriber and you have the capacity to leave a tip, that would be so appreciated. <3
i love you.
bye.
I’d be lost without my local library! I love to read and can’t afford to purchase every single book that’s on my TBR, so the library definitely is my go-to 📚🖤
