Yes, she made some excellent points! It’s such a nuanced topic, that’s why I felt compelled to expand on my thoughts and experiences. And I do, too. It’s so comforting 🤎

Wonderfully said, thank you! As someone who has also struggled with “niching down” and felt its detriments my entire online career, it’s so nice to hear someone else champion being our multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary, multi-passionate, multi-hyphenate selves 🫶

I truly understand the struggle! Maybe not niching down is a niche 🤭

love that!

I agree! I’m just planning my first Substack letter and it’s essentially an essay on how I’ve never been able to do think. Thank you for keeping it real!

Ugh the article you referenced was literally the first thing I read this morning (still in bed) and it put me in such a sour mood. Immediately seeing this and a few others after really helped me get out of my own head.

I too adore diary entry style posts, there is something so intimate about them!!! And I also have really struggle to niche down and thus given up on doing so.

Let people live and let people write! 🩷

As a multi-passionate person myself, I have to say I love reading stuff about different topics. And honestly, most times I feel more attracted to the writing style of an author than the content itself.

Also, I'm tired of the monetization rat race and how we have to keep thinking on ways to push out content that generates interactions and clicks. It kills creativity, in my opinion. And it's the main reason why I can bring myself to start writing here on substack

Totally. I think that’s why this topic is so complex and multilayered.

i agree completely! as a reader its your choice on what you want to read and pay for, whether its more light hearted articles or serious essays there should be space for both

i recently downloaded substack to enjoy a place creative people could share. from profound, introspective articles to listicles, i enjoy it all because i am very much a mood reader. i was a little disappointed when i saw some pieces that you could tell were made for likes only… pieces that could easily be transformed into an instagram post (mostly thought this because if you’d look at the creators instagram, bam there it also was). so pretty much, post whatever you like, as niche as you’d like it. as long as there is thought and passion behind it, its a good read!

Thank you for sharing! I recently found my way to substack after reconnecting with my love of writing. But I put it off for a long time because I couldn't think of a topic or vibe to focus on... I find myself writing poems, spirited rambles, short stories and like you finally decided well, I'm doing this for me so I may as well do it my way. Even though I'm still new here, it can feel discouraging to watch it only be my three friends I all but forced to put their emails in. There's always that part that wants the outside validation in the form of likes or new subscribers who actually found me on here, but I have to remind myself if I dampen my authenticity to attract those people, then all I'm left with is people who aren't here for the real me.

I really appreciate your nuanced, thoughtful take on this. I feel a lot of the reactions I've seen so far have been defensive and failed to engage with the points she actually made, even if just to disagree.

Yes! She brought up some important points that are worth a deeper discussion. Emily is a great writer. 🤎
