I absolutely love Gilmore Girls, and you nailed it with the lack of growth from Rory mixed with her gifted kid syndrome. It was frustrating to see her win, crash, burn, and...learn nothing from it? No consequences besides some friction with Lorelai. A Year In The Life is unwatchable for me because it's an expansion of Rory's worst arc of not knowing what's next and self-inflicted relationship struggles, rather than the growth that we could've seen from her.
Very well put together. I have watched the series so many times. Each time I find more to not like. You're right, it is good background noise when its needed until something better is found. I would really like to read about your take on Lorelai. What your thoughts on her which should be many. Again thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Gilmore girls is something that routinely makes an appearance on my Netflix for you page but despite the reviews I've never really found myself attracted to it. Now I have a perfectly good reason to continue avoiding it and will be spending that time checking out 'Normal People.'
The high school years of Gilmore Girls are all I can really watch at this point. Rory and the decisions she makes in college (agreeing with Marty that y’all don’t know each other and have never met? And you’re best friends with his girlfriend? This never made sense to me), and dropping out of Yale, and gosh, so many other things.
The one thing Gilmore Girls had going for it was all of the quirky characters like Kirk, Miss Patty, etc…
I really wanted to like Gilmore girls. But both Lorelai and Rory are insufferable. They get away with disgusting behaviours (an example: staring at a man minding his own business at Luke’s, just because he is sitting on ”their” spot) and they get babied by everyone in town. Also, the screenwriters did Paris dirty not getting her accepted to Harvard. Ans I loved Jesse, honestly the only reason I liked Gilmore girls.
Ok. I loved reading this. I agreed with you on everything. I felt how you felt. I am in the process of rewatching the show, and I have to say, I am frustrated with the same things you are. My third rewatch and I am seeing all you had to say. Very frustrating with rory and the boyfriends and everyone in general. Funny how I never saw it until now before I read your article. Great article by the way.
Even as a diehard GG fan, I sometimes hate Rory. I call pretty much every episode post Yale dropout the "dumb bitch Rory" episodes. That being said, I do relate to her plight. Many a millennial (myself included) can relate to the gifted-and-talented-child to unremarkable adult pipeline, and that is primarily why it can be so hard to watch her be so stupid.
But also Jess forever. He was truly the best. He was a (albeit reallllly cute) shit in the beginning, but he represented everything Rory wanted for her life when she was young and optimistic.
Your post is such a thoughtful reflection on Gilmore Girls. I completely relate to the mix of comfort and frustration with the show. The cozy, autumnal vibes make it a nostalgic retreat, yet Rory’s character development, or lack thereof, often feels like a missed opportunity. Her early drive and relationship with Lorelai were relatable, but over time, her entitlement and poor decisions made her hard to root for.
not a fan of Rory or any of her relationships honestly, i’m a Dave Rygalski girl
Oh period!!

I refuse to watch a year in the life lollll
Jess forever. Justice for Paris. You are spot on with everything you said.

Kirk!!! They also did him pretty dirty but I always enjoyed watching him whenever they would give him screen time
I love the show but Lorelei and Rory infuriate me.
The boyfriends were all terrible, but then again so was Rory so🤷♀️
If you want more in depth analysis + critiques, I strongly recommend the Gilmore guys podcast.
I’ve heard of that podcast! I’ll need to check it out

Agreed!! But Paris turned out alright and she’s still a badass. Jess supremacy forever <3

Yes, it’s crazy to see how differently we consume media as we get older

Jess girl here. I'm a firm believer that the introduction of Rory's grandparents into her life completely ruined her.
Team Jess forever. And I agree, her charactee development completely stalled in later years.
Jess girl for life 🖤
“Well, what is much?”
